Hunting for a Holy Well

I’ve been spending some time exploring the maps at Archaeology.ie and happily discovered an ancient holy well, enclosure, and ritual site very close to my home. The site was within walking distance and the evening was warm, bright and calm so off we headed on a Holy Well hunt. Heading towards Castletownbere we walked, searching for the little side road that would lead us to the well.

The side road running west was actually a farm track. It’s always good to remember to wear your boots when hunting for heritage sites. If it had been a rainy day the track would have been little more than a mud bath. Don’t forget to tread lightly and respectfully.

Before continuing up the track we turned to look at the view behind us. The view to the east was beautiful under the billowing clouds. The area across the way is known as Cloontreem and is rich with archaeological history and sites. Such a beautiful and storied landscape!

Off we went, up the road, looking for the well. How hard could it be to find it? It was clearly marked on the map…we were so certain it would be extremely easy to find. “Is it in that field?”

“Could it be on the other side of the the spider webs and bog cotton, over near those gorse bushes?”

“I wonder if it under those old wooden skids? Could it possibly be there? Or maybe its closer to the woods in the distance?” “We really should have looked at the map more carefully…it didn’t look that far from the main road.”

“Let’s go back to the beginning of the track and start over. I think we missed something.”

“Is that the way? Found it!”

The well was straight ahead all along, right in the centre of that grassy knoll! Please join me as we continue the short hike to St.Finnian’s well.
